Floppy drive problems

I'm stumped as to why my floppy drive isn't working. I fried the one I had before, and replaced it, so the drive I'm using is brand new. I know the IDE cable is inserted correctly (activity light is only illuminated when it should be), the cable is working fine, because it's brand new, the disks are okay, because I've tested about five different disks (all from the same box), and I still have the problem. The drive is recognized by the OS, because I see the drive in My Computer. I know the drive isn't a lemon, because I had the same problem with the same model drive earlier, returned the drive, and got a new one; the problem persisted.

The problem is that the OS never recognizes an inserted disk. I try to open A: Drive, and it prompts for me to insert a disk. The disk is already in the drive, so I take it out and put it back in. No workie.

It seems that the problem is one of the following: its Windows's fault, the floppy controller on the motherboard is shot, or every disk in the pack of 8 that I bought is suddenly useless, after working just swell a few weeks ago. Help? 🙁

I fried my original floppy drive by plugging in the power plug upside down.

I can't install Windows onto my brand new 2x 120GB SATA Drives on RAID 0 until I get this stupid floppy drive functioning.

Are you sure the disk is inserted completely? You may have mounted the drive too close to the front of the case.

The disk is in properly. I push in the disk, and I hear it click as it locks in.

I've seen a case cause similar issues like that. Basically, at Dell, there was a known issue with GX150's and the plastic covering the floppy drive. The drive would work great out of the case, wouldnt work in it. Perhaps you should try the drive outside the case? (I know some cases have extra buttons and plastic that block access directly to the floppy)

There's no plastic at all blocking the floppy drive. It's a custom-built PC with a standard flat-front design. It's nice and open, like this one (but black and shiny, of course 😀)

Using the same case, the old floppy drive of mine worked flawlessly.

Is the drive connected at the cable twist?
Have you confirmed the drive in another machine?
