Floppy drive problem?

I recently built a new computer for someone and they seem to be having a problem with it. The computer has Windows XP Home, Norton Internet Security 2004 and Microsoft Office 2003 on it.

When typing a document in Microsoft Word, the light for the floppy disk drive will come on randomly and stay on (no disk is in the drive). At this time, the cursor changes to an hourglass and next to where it says "Microsoft Word" at the top of the screen it says "(not responding)". If a floppy disk is inserted into the drive, the light goes out almost immediately, the cursor returns to normal, and the "not responding" disappears and the computer works fine again.

Any ideas on why this is happening and how I can stop it?

Thanks for the replies. Jackschmitusa hit it on the head. They had done a "save as" in order to save the file to a floppy and then removed the floppy disk. Word apparently then tries to do the autosave to the A: drive until the defaul location is set back to the hard drive.
