Floppy Drive not responding?

My floppy drive is detected just fine by my bios (at least i figure it is, i dont get a post error) and windows, but i cant seem to get it to read any disks. It doesnt light up either when starting my computer. If I boot up with a non-system disk in the drive, it boots into windows like there isnt a problem. In windows, when I have a disk in the drive and double click on the floppy drive, it asks me to insert a disk. If I try to format the disk in the dos prompt, it tells me that the drive is busy. This is a brand new system - p4 1.6 on a p4b533 mb. Ive tried 2 drives now and 2 cables, and they both do the same thing. I only have 3 disks to test, but I really dont think that all 3 are bad. If I unplug the drive, I get a bios error saying no floppy disk detected. This is really weird. Anyone have ideas as to what is causing this?

Try a different floppy drive, is my advice, if you really need one. If it is not showing activity when you boot, perhaps the machine is not set to boot from the floppy.

It may be the power supply.

Try booting up with the drive plugged in, but the power unplugged. See what happens. I'm not sure myself.

If that's not it, it may be the motherboard.

Good luck.

dumb mistake i sometimes make is to plug the floppy cable upside down into the floppy. will produce the symptoms you describe.
