Im wondering if this is the case, according to my friend. In order to install anything on my new HD i would have to boot into dos and run fdisk in initialize the drive.

No, either XP or Vista will format your HD. No floppy drive required.

The only time when you *might* actually need a floppy drive is if you want to update the BIOS on some motherboards, but most new motherboards allow you to update the BIOS via a USB flash drive.

In most occasions you can update the BIOS using a USB flash disk. However if you're installing XP and you need to load a driver during installation (F6) a floppy can come in handy. Other than that the floppy is pretty much useless.

I haven't had a floppy drive since 2005, and I've done more reinstalls of Windows that I remember. Never needed it! I even flashed my BIOS from Windows.

No it's not necessary unless you have to install some form of SCSI drivers but then they usually allow using a USB flash drive or CD. Also, like they said BIOS updates for your motherboard may need it but I know that Asus allows you to do it from a flash drive or a CD.
