Floppy drive dying?

My floppy drive is not even old or used and it's making an abrasive noise when it spins my disks as if they are bad, but they aren't. Sometimes I won't be allowed to write even to a perfectly good disk. I have had this drive for perhaps 3 months and only used it for transferring a few files. My BIOS screen also pauses between the system info screen and searching for the floppy all of a sudden in the last few weeks.
I'm not saying floppies don't have a place, but they look an unreliable dinosaur compared to the rest of PC gear. If a Sony drive can't even work for 3 months properly...!
