Yesterday my 5 year old unbranded laptop, 500 Celeron, 384 MB RAM, WIN2K, would boot as far as "Checking IDE Devices" and the screen also said the floppy drive controller was "bad". I killed the power and tried to start twice more and got the same error. I then disconnected my external drives and USB 2 BUS adaptor card and the notebook booted up. I checked the floppy drive and it was present and working.
Today at startup I got as far as Checking IDE Devices, Floppy Drive Controller can not start error code 10. I disconnected external drives and BUS card and the notebook booted up. This time the A drive was not present and had the yellow exclamation in Device Manager.
I have not made any changes in the BIOS.
Any ideas on what happened or how to fix?
