floppy drive backwards?

I read that on drives, the red wire (pin #1) of the IDE cable should be facing the power connector. well, it's true for my hard drive and dvd drive, but not the floppy. I just finished putting the system together but don't want to risk screwing something up. on the floppy drive, the IDE cable that came with my motherboard (a kt7-raid) only fits in one way, and that way is with the red wire on the opposite side of the power connector, not facing it. I checked in another computer, and the floppy IDE cable in it has the red pin facing the power cable. do I need a new cable?

Some floppy drives have it backwards. If you plug your FDD in and the small LED is lit when you power up and will stay lit, you have to put the cable the other way... you won't ruin your FDD if you plug the cable in backwards.

the FDD light does stay on, so I'm guessing the cable is in wrong. but I can't plug it in the other way, it doesn't fit. do I need a new cable?

This is a common issue with the cable packs that come with ABIT mobos and Teac and Sony floppies. The red stripe on a floppy goes to the left, looking at the pins. (forget the power connector). make sure your mobo connector is correct first, (since a floppy cable is twisted you can't flip it at the mobo end) then cut off the plastic lug on the floppy end.

Red line always goes to pin1...your floppy should have it marked near the pins (1 and 2 right next to each other)

common issue? that's a strange issue...well, what's nonstandard here, the cable or the floppy drive? because if it's the cable then I'll get a new one. it only fits in one way on the mobo, so I'm assuming that way is correct. about the red stripe on the left, is this only for floppies? on my hard drive and DVD drive, they're on the right. and none of the drives seem to have pin 1 indicators...is cutting off the lug fine, or something I should be worried about?

It can't hurt to plug it in backwards...I've done it a few times accidentally. You know you've done it when the drive light stays on constantly. Floppy cables are cheap...don't worry about destroying one.

I have an NEC floppy drive, and it's the same way. Red stripe goes away from the power connection.

I wish they would start using round cables of some sort. these huge ribbon cables kill airflow and are an overall pain in the ass.

I had that problem when installing my Abit mobo with my Teac FDD, took me over 10 mins to realise what was wrong 😱

yeah sometimes you will need to flip the cable when you connect it to your floppy. i had that problem many times. sometimes i had to cut off the little notch in the middle for it to fit into the floppy.

I cut off the lug, now it fits, and works 🙂 and those IDE cables are getting annoying, I don't know why it took so long for round cables to start coming how...hopefully they'll be out soon, or maybe everything wireless 🙂
