Floppy Disk(s) Fail (40)

Okay, I built a new computer and I placed a system disk in the floppy drive before I turned on the computer. After I turn on the computer, it does a memory check, then it says "Floppy Disk(s) Fail (40)." What's wrong? The system disk works fine. Is it something with my floppy drive?

Usually you get that if your floppy cable is upside down try flipping it (at the drive).

The rule of pin1 near the power doesn't always work for floppies.

Okay, the floppy drive light is always on. I tried to flip the cable but it doesn't fit. You know how at the end of the cable there's a small thing that pops out in the center? Well, if I try to flip it and plug it in, the center thing gets in the way so I can't push it in.

Okay nevermind, I pushed the bottom of the floppy drive down a little to budge it in. Now it works, but there's another problem. It says Disk I/O Error, replace disk and push any key.

Yes there is a disk in the drive. It is a boot disk I made on my other computer. My other computer is an Intel P3 Win98SE. The one I made is AMD T-Bird.

My first guess is crappy floppy disk, try another boot disk and see if it will kick itself on.

First question, is this a new floppy or a system pull and second are we trying to install 98?

I made the system disk on my old computer, the P3 Win98SE one. I made another system disk and it still didn't work either. On my new computer, I will install Win2000.

hummmm.......Must think in sleep deprived brain.....

Well can you boot to the w2k cd? that will at least give ya an OS to play with.

Okay, I fixed the problem. It looks like both the disks were bad. I made another one and tested and it worked. Weird. Thanks for all the help!
