"Floppy disk(s) error[40]" and more.......

I just successfully powered up my first computer built with my own hands, installing Windows 98 quickily and easily. The only problem is that I get "Floppy disk(s) error[40]" whenever I start the computer, but pressing F1 continues on with boot up, pretty much ignoring the floppy error.

Does that mean that the floppy is dead? I had the cable switched around before, would that have killed my floppy? Also, I have a few more questions about my new system.....

I just purchased Windows XP upgrade......when should I upgrade to XP over 98? Before I install drivers such as the VIA 4 in 1s, etc., or should I install all drivers for my hardware before upgrading to XP?

I have the Shuttle Kt266a, and I'm planning on switching to the Audigy instead of the onboard sound, do I need to install those Via Audio drivers if I'm not planning on using the onboard sound?

Thanks in advance.

Usually it is just a cable error. Are you sure that the Floppy ribbon AND the power cable are in the right way. Triple check you have it set up right

I don't have the cable switched around anymore because the light doesn't stay on, but it was before.

Just to make sure, you connect floppy cables like you would an IDE cable right? By that, I mean you use the connector between the end connectors for the first and only device on the cable, right? The end connector with the twist right by it is not connected unless you have more than one floppy, right?

Nope, you want the end of the cable going into the main floppy drive. Hook the drive up to the end connecter (the conntector with the bit of ribbon "flipped") and you ought to be alright.

ahhh, thx for that helpful bit of info:)

Anyone want to steer me in a direction regarding whether I should install drivers now or first install Windows XP first? I imagine XP would detect most of my hardware for me? Windows 98 didn't detect my Geforce3 Ti200, XP would detect it right?
