Floppy Disk Failure (40)

I'm attempting to build an IBM compatible at home. After having a tech look at it (to make sure I wouldn't get electrocuted), I brought it back home, plugged it in, and prepared to install windows '98 second edition. I'm getting this error message: Floppy Disk Failure (40). That error message isn't listed in any of my reference books or the manual that came with the motherboard. Does anyone know if it's a software or hardware problem? Or what the error message means?

It is probably just that, you floppy is not working anymore. If you have 2 PCs, swapt the drive and see if it works(assuming that it is properlly connected). If not pic one up at your local PC shop for no more than 20 bucks, if that. Oh yeah, forget about calling a tech again, hardware swaping is not brain surgery, you can do all that your self with the help of forums like this one, just watch out because you can get sucked in really quick and become a techy your self in no time.

The Floppy cable is on backwards. You need to make sure pin 1 in conected to the red line on the cable.

I don't think you can get the cable backwards it has those two notches on each end. But I could be wrong.

I've put it on backwards and what shows is the lite on all the time but of course no data. I've also had a floppy fail when moved from another machine and that took a while to figure out.

Swap floppys, or get a new(used) one and try that.

Floppy cable is on wrong most likely, I have seen it many times. Also some floppy cables have two 2 different ends you can use. Make sure the one with the twist in the cable wires is used. Some cable ends do not come with the notch as does one of mine and is easy to put on backwards. Seems every one of my floppies is set up different from the other.

This one has got me a few times. Go in the bios an enable floppy a & B with floppy swap. The computer is looking for a floppy in a and it is in b. You can then make it a.

I know it happens. I have done it myself. I don't know what it is, But you almost always have to plug in the floppy wrong. Just make sure the Red wire on the ribbon is facing the power conector... That will probly fix it....
