I just got back from Queens....
Traffic SUCKED with certain parts of the LIE filled with rocks, dirt and cars pushed to the side. Lots of flooded basements and I just dropped off some supplies for family.

I saw the beautiful sunshine outside and (briefly) considered grabbing a cheap ticket to tonight's Mets game which as of now to the best of my knowledge is still happening, but I'm thinking it's not a good idea at all now.

Be surprised if its not postponed. :(

Just watched a video of flooding that shut down the NYC subways.

Looks like my immediate area dodged another bullet but not by much.

NYC struggles to re-start subways

That's awful. Hopefully they can get things cleaned up. Water like that is way worse than if this were dumped in a snow storm where it would melt at a more controlled rate.

I missed major path of the storm by 100 miles or more and still saw rain. Hopefully the next storm coming, "Larry" won't be as bad.

It's NYC
It'll get cleaned up quick and soon as traffic clears up some idiot will sideswipe someone else and traffic starts anew.
That or the night terrors NYC drivers sometime gets when they come across a slight dip in the middle of a curve.

Not implying that a drive from CT to Queens would be a life-threatening adventure or anything lol ... however they were advising commuters to stay home earlier on News 880. (CBS NYC News radio)

Traffic OTW to the game is likely to be no fun at all.

Yeah....but when will all the normal NYC hazards start up?

So, Ida travels roughly 1200 miles from the Gulf after being a cat4 and still manages to dump 5" of rain in one hour on central park. A historic record.

I'm in central NJ and just got a little watger in thhe basement. Sandy was much worse for me. I had a torrent running from the shallow basement into the garage which is just a couple inches higher. It was and actual free flowing stream.

Anyway, it looks like regardless of the direction these weather systems come at us from, we will still need to assume the position.

News 880 reported several people in basement apartments in NYC died in a flash-flood that poured in through their bedroom windows.

I just saw a video someone posted of rain pouring into their NYC basement apartment.
Almost makes you think it's time to, I dunno, take some sort of 1/8th-assed approach about maybe trying to do something in a decade or two to keep things from getting worse. Wait, that's what we're already doing.

But like that might raise taxes or make it harder for companies to make as much money polluting the environment! If we ignore it it will go away

Basement got flooded in my building. Had stuff in storage down there. Definitely will be throwing stuff out tomorrow. Luckily most of it I haven't used in the 3 years it was down there save for a few things. I managed to save all my backpacking and car camping gear though. Those are the two things I really wanted to save. They were elevated. Just the backpacking gear would take over a grand to re-buy. So that's nice.

Luckily this place was a gut reno four years ago, and the builder put in a sump pump. It has worked before keeping any water from making it far in the basement and doing any damage at all- it was set up well. But this was just a volume of water it could not handle. There were 6-7 inches or so of water in there when I discovered it and waded in. This was around 9pm. The sump pump was actually working when I checked - the next time I went down to check shortly after midnight, the basement was cleared of water.

Luckily the three hot water heaters for all our units, and the HVAC for unit 1, are on a small section of the basement that is slightly elevated. They were still submerged, but just under maybe 2-3 inches of water instead of the 6-7. I saw the gas valve was not under water, so that's good. Hot water is working fine today, may have to get the burner checked and cleaned at some point. Apparently the owner of Unit 1 emailed and said his tenants have said the HVAC is working fine for them today. So it's still pushing air through the system while the outside condenser cools the air. I wonder what will happen when they try to use it for a heat in a few months though, since the heat is provided by that unit as well.

Walking the dog, lots of homes had stuff drying outside from basement flooding. This area, streets don't really flood. Last night, there was some slight flooding at intersections but nothing too bad. It was the basements that got fucked.

My rental has a half-finished basement. Water was literally leaking out at eye-level from the painted cinder-block wall. Wild.

I was fortunate that we didn't get too much flood damage. The government text alert came in around midnight & woke me up & I was able to get buckets & towels down for the two leaks I found. My friend got 8" of water in her basement, huge mess. It's very hit & miss in different areas. The on-ramp I take onto the highway was completely flooded & blocked off yesterday.

Driving to my sister's house yesterday probably saw about 20 abandoned cars on the side of a major highway. Which I heard was nothing compared to other highways.

Also a friend who does construction including a lot of hvac and hot water stuff, said our hot water heaters should be fine with the amount of water they were submerged in, and considering they are putting out hot water. Phew.

Yeah... Connecticut got hammered with rain as well, far more than what we got with tropical storm Henri.

It caused this sinkhole at the golf course in Cromwell:

Now THAT is a proper golf hazard!

Increasingly our Economies are being dedicated to merely dealing with the effects of CC. How will we prosper if all we do is Rebuild?
