<< We haven't actually located the black box. We've gotten it narrowed down," said Scott McKay of Arlington County, Virginia, Fire and Rescue, recounting what he was told at a Pentagon briefing. >>

Do the boxes have some sort o' transmitter in them so that they can be found quickly or what?

I'm just going by what's on CNN's page, that was posted at 4:57 EDT. Here.

Yes, they have beacons to make them easier to find, that is what they are reporting has been picked up. Just a matter of finding it and analyzing all the data and stuff.

What would be really interesting is the cockpit voice recorder, which is different from the flight data recorded which is usually referred to as the 'black box.'

One or Both recorders can be turned off? I thought they both were on all the time?

I thought that was the transponder that was turned off? It sends out signals to ATC that allows them to quickly identify what type of plane it is and other data about what the plane is doing right now. They turned that off to make it harder to track the plane..

The CNN page is referring to the plane that hit the Pentagon. The news ToBeMe is reporting is regarding the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania (the PA in the title).

That could be what it is. I really think that feature should be removed, what the hell is the point of turning it off?

Oh, they have "Flight recorder found" on the front page, linked to that article.

Ahh.. I see. At the top they have:
Flight data recorder found from hijacked plane in Pennsylvania, Justice Department says. Details soon.

You're right, they have updated the headline on the main page, but not the story it links to. Rather confusing.

If they can make the flight recorder never get shattered to pieces why can't they make the whole plane out of the same stuff?

Are you willing to pay $5000 for a flight from NYC to LAX then?

No one said they are indestructable. They can be destroyed, especially the nature of the firey crash could have destroyed it. We are all very lucky it wasnt.

inertia would kill you even if they make the airplane unbreakable. i.e., airplane stop suddenly, you still going forward.

Yo,
In that same Blackbox article, it mentions that the news everywhere yesterday about the Firefighters rescued from that SUV... it was a hoax. CNN says they don't know where that story came from...

just cause the plane doesnt shatter doesnt mean the passengers won't die. the impact is still severe. no matter how well you were seat belted in, if your talking that type impact you still die.
