WTH is going on? I came home today, there are flies everywhere! WTF? I must have killed 30 so far. These flies are huge also....It seems like whenever I kill them, they just come back to life because there are always two more. Any ideas on what I can do? I shut all my windows and every window had at least 1 fly in it now. Perhaps, since it was trash day, they are all flying around and one of them declared a party at my apartment? I guess I should be happy it is not cockroaches or mice?

I had this happen to me last week. I had no flies in the house, and after a hike and get back home, I literally see a ball of flies by the window sills, it was disgusting. I just grabbed my vacuum cleaner and sucked them all in.

My only guess of how they got in is I must have left the front door ajar when a friend wanted to use the restroom at the house. Still, I can't imagine that many flies coming in in a span of 2 minutes or so.

They're likely breeding somewhere....

See if you can follow your nose...

definately sounds like a recent hatching, some friends had the same problem recently. at least the little flies seem to go comatose once they find a window spot.

how long does it take for them to get big? In the window in my office, there is one that is almost half the size of my thumb.

That happened to me a couple months ago. Ginormous flies everywhere. My only guess is I was less than diligent taking my compost bucket out to the pile, but I really don't know. I killed them all within a few days, and haven't seen any since.

Clean the kitchen and bathrooms. Anywhere where there may be food.

Use a foaming insecticide on the garbage disposal.

Put up some fly strips.

If you're not already doing it; clean any food off of used pots/plates/bowls immediately after you're done with it. (especially if it contained meat)

Use small shopping bags for trash and take them out regularly.

We're having the exact same problem at my house. Most likely culprit? Dead mouse in the vents. Not much you can do except keep things as clean as possible and kill any flies you see to prevent them from reproducing. No reason to give them more food or more opportunities to breed.

update:

Well....all was good until last night. It seemed like this issue only happened for one day....however...it began again yesterday. I closed all the windows and hoped it would go away like it did last time. Nope, the problem still occurred. I did some investigating this morning. Saw that lots of them hung around the cabinet door below the sink. I opened the door...I was greeted by this awful smell. I moved stuff around....this tail popped out of this small box. Apparently, the previous tenant put this closed up mouse trap under the sink... well...I guess it took 2 years to finally catch something....

I lost my appetite for lunch. That is all I can say now.

flies? dead mouse? move out of the ghetto

I would tend to disagree....but then again, East Cambridge is kind of close to being ghetto....and trust me, as soon as I land a job, this place on gonna be on the rental market.

damn same problem.

This week, we have fruit flies or baby flies all over the house; in rooms with no food. I hope shit didn't die in my vents.

Some small flies/gnats will lay eggs in moist indoor plant soil so you have to be careful not to over-water you house plants.
