A new system and a monitor which flickers ...

System: P4 3Ghz 478Pin 800MHz FSB; MSI 6758 i875P board; Corsair 1024MB DDR SDRAM; MSI-FX5600 TD256 card; Maxtor 30GB & Western 120GB drives.

Monitor: Mitsubishi 1998FD Diamond View 19" flat screen.

OS: Win2000 Pro

I got all the latest drivers; tried all resolution settings; removed all speakers and adapters; returned it to the vendor who tested (albeit with XP and a Ti4600 card) it and found no fault with the monitor ...

The flicker varies in intensity and nearly disappears at times; it is strongest in the lower left side corner of the screen ...

Does all this prove that it is a lemon - or is there something else I can try to make it work properly ???

Maybe there's a connection problem (in which case it could be a graphics card issue).

Have you got any other graphics cards on hand you could use in your system to see if it's the card or monitor?

Or it could be a faulty card.

Have you got a different monitor you could use to check the card?

It used to be that on nvidia cards in fullscreen games Windows would only allow 60Hz refresh rate. I have no idea if they fixed that already. New detonators have a refresh rate override option - but only for directx and not for opengl. (There are 3rd party programs to do that - which modify the registry for you).
It is possible to change refresh rate for windows desktop under advanced display settings.

Another thing can be your eyes - I had that problem with lower left flickering on an older monitor, especially when I was tired, or when I didn't have my glasses on...

do you have any large speakers or anything that emits a large magnetic field near the monitor? it would affect the flickering as well a color (i used to have 2 LARGE 3 1/2 ft. unshielded speakers which damaged my monitor)
