Flickering in CS Counter Strike on my Radeon 8500

I have my refresh rate at 85Hz and have turned off vsync but am experienceing flickering. I recently updated to Windows XP, and so far am having no big problems besides the bad quality and low fps in CS. What could the problem be? 😕

You sir are experiencing the Windows XP 60Hz refresh rate bug. You may have your refresh rate at 85Hz in Windows but once you run an OpenGL game (and I think some Direct3D games), your refresh rate reverts back to 60Hz. Oh and you should turn vsync back on unless you want that tearing in your graphics.

If you run this command -- cl_showfps 1 -- in your console, you should see that you're running at 60FPS no matter what.

Here's the Fix

Here's the thread that shows it works

If that's not your problem then you should probably update your drivers.

I'm not sure, but it seems to be working better now. What settings should I check off in the OpenGL and D3D properties??

What do you mean? In the refreshlock program? I don't know cuz I don't have an ATI card under WinXP. In CS however, you should enable cl_showfps 1 so that you can see what your FPS is.. that'll give you an idea of what your refresh rate is at.

Hope it works

Actually, I'd like to know what settings I should click in my video card properties, not the refreshlock program.

<< Er looks like my refresh rate is still at 60Hz. Wonder what I'm doing wrong >>

Did you reboot after applying changes?

The program keeps changing to Refresh Overriding > Off as soon as I go into the game!

That's odd... hmm, since I've never really used the program myself.. maybe you can post in that Rage3d.com forum that I gave you the link too

refresh rate thread

Anyone else know how I might fix this? The low FPS is really killing me. My best game since the upgrade was only 40-5 in 30 minutes, and I'm averaging only a bit over 1 kill per minute. 😕

I am using athlon xp/win2k/gforce3 ti200 and also can get no more than 60hrz refresh rate in counter strike. any help would be much appreciated.
