Hey guys...

This is a system that I built for a friend:

t-bird 1100 (100 fsb)
abit kt7a
384mb cas2 corsair
leadtek geforce2mx dual head
60 gb ibm hd
ricoh 12x cdr
pioneer 16x dvd
internet pro keyboard w/ hotkeys and 2 usb
optical explorer mouse
sb live
oem 3com winmodem

I got the system working fine, but his modem was giving him troubles. his aol could not communicate with it. so i found some drivers that i think were correct and loaded them. I disabled the two serial ports in the bios to allow the modem to be assigned com1 or com2. then it still wouldn't work. i popped the case and put the modem in another pci slot. when i rebooted i could get it to post and see the windows spash screen, but no desktop. it just sits there flickering a little bit. Sometimes i can still close windows by hitting alt-f4 though. so it is like i just lost my video signal. When that black screen happens, the monitor doesn't say "lost video signal" or anything like that. it is just black. I appreciate any help you guys could give me.

Thanks,

Chris

What IRQ does the video card use?

Post a listing and lets take a look. Perhaps there is a conflict between the video card IRQ and one of the two that you reserved for the modem?

Before you switched slots, did you remove the modem in Control Panel, Modems?

If not, you've still got the drivers installed for the modem and now you've introduced a second modem into the system.

Reboot in Safe Mode and uninstall the drivers. Which, with this being a 3com winmodem may not be as easy as it should.

What OS you using?

Shared IRQ's may be contributing at this point. But you will need to get the system back as it was first.

Put the modem back in the original slot and update the sound card drivers... (most common AOL problem...)

Thanks for the replies. I just got home from spring break. I will try your suggestions next weekend when I have access to the computer.

Thanks again!
