My monitor flickers worse at 85Hz than 60 Hz!!!
I'm currently running a Geforce2 Pro on a Dell P991 19" trinitron @ 1280x1024 in WinXP...also using the latest reference drivers (23.11). What is my problem???
I'm thinking that it could be the video card itself or the monitor's location...I've had the video card since april '01 and I got the monitor brand new last week.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Well unfortunately I cant help you but I am interested how the image quality of the monitor is???
Other than the fact that you are having refresh probs??? I was thinking of getting one...

if ur monitor can't handle 85mhz at your present resolution, than it should flicker. according to dell's website...u r running at optimal resolution & refresh rate. maybe u should give them a call. if there is something wrong with the monitor...dell pays for shipping (at least they always do for me).

I bet it isn't worse at high refresh rates it is probably the same. This has been a big problem in Windows XP with all video cards. There are quite a few fixes do a search for refresh rates and I am sure you will come up with a bunch of them.

delic:
the monitor itself is very nice quality...i don't see any blurring at 1280x1024 and it seems a lot sharper than my flat NEC 21"

thanks guy for the input...I might goto fry's and pick up a geforce3 or radeon8500 to try it out for kicks :)

just got the 8500...still flickers a little at 85Hz and the 8500 also gave me the option to set the monitor to 90Hz...and it flickers even less...almost acceptable levels to me

I clicked the reply button by mistake on the last message.. whoops

Still sounds wierd.. 85Hz shoudnt flicker.. According to the "experts", the human eye can not notice flicker with refresh rates of anything above around 75Hz..

Now I personally disagree with this because I have noticed flicker on high Hz monitors myself.. Now either "they" are wrong and you can notice refresh rate flickering above 75Hz
OR
the monitor companies are getting these numbers in a "best theoretical performance" type way, kinda like cd roms and saying you have a 52X drive.. Only, the only place you get these speeds are on the last track of the cd... ( Velocity = spin speed x radius) I digress..

Anyway I am beginning to think these companies are being a bit dishonest with these numbers.. I could be wrong, I dont know... I do know a tv signal is 60Hz and I have seen 75Hz monitors flicker MUCH more than TV... Suspicious.

I just built a computer and the monitor is by far the most difficult purchase...

oh poor me...it turns out that it is the location of the monitor that's causing the flickering...:(

i guess i'll move it somewhere else for now...sigh...

I noticed when I loaded XP that 85Hz was NOT what it was in 98SE. I used to find 75Hz tolerable, and 85Hz was great in Win98. But now, 85 Hz is intoleable, and 100Hz is the lowest I can go and not get flicker.

This HAS to be something with XP, as it was the same with both a GF2 Pro and a GF3 Ti500.

And yes, I've installed the nVidia refresh tweak. But that only affects game refresh rates, not 2D rates.
