Do want the just the threaded stock covered or the nuts too?

If it was the just the threaded stock I might just get some plastic tubing from HD and cut a slit in it. I'm sure someone even sells colored tubing.

To cover threaded stock and nuts, I think I'd cut a channel in some 2" X 2" pine.

Or, they do have sheet metal C channel stock that is used to mount clamps for conduit or pipe. It's usually already painted gloss black too.

On anything solid you could put a stick-on magnet inside to stop rattles.

I was hoping to go around the whole washer assembly. I think thinner than that with the fake wood grain would look pretty odd.

I'd get some foam of some kind. Something like pipe insulation stuff that you see.

like this

Make a slice lengthwise to allow it to be wrap around the metal, or don't and put it on as you assemble it.

I'll update it if I end up doing that.

The time frame for painting and rod covers is going to be months. Unless I get really bored over the summer, I will probably wait until after I move (I still don't know where I'm living in August).

I wasn't sure what your time frame was for the covers, so I thought I would check. The rack's looking good as it is, so I understand your lack of hurry.
