Flex Installer WinXP Service Question...

I was looking at something about the Flex Installer the other day, and I saw one of the options was installing SETI@Home to run as a service in WinXP. Does this service install require the use of SETI Queue?

Questions about the "Flex Installer" pop-up from time to time and we don't seem to have a good handle on this.

Maybe someone (hint, hint) could familiarize themselves with this program written by bot2600 and write up a nice FAQ?

I tried it myself right after it was first created and I seem to remember something about it not having a quick and easy way to "un-install"?

I'd suggest you (Steve) go ahead and mess around with it and let us know what you discover. :D

Greg, I'll see if i can get onto writing up an FAQ. My new laptop for work should be delivered tomorrow, so I will have a computer at work to play with, so I will write one up :)

Steve, if you can wait til tomorrow night, then i'll let you know everything you need to know :)

No problem. I have been trying to get an easy non-SETI Queue XP service install for months now, a couple of more days will not hurt.

Barring anything else, I may tinker with it a bit this week, since I am going to be replacing my HD anyway. Perfect time to create chaos using unfamiliar software. :D

Things that would be nice to know how to do:

a. direct the Flex Installer to a proxy server (I think it does have that option)
b. choose which port to access the internet (to help it get by firewalls ... without bothering the IT Admin) ;)
c. how to un-install it (for when you change your mind or whatever)

:)

I started to put Confused's name in my first post, right next to the "hint, hint". :p :D

The FlexInstaller works great but the uninstall process is a real PITA... If I remember correctly you have to stop the service, manually remove the files, and manually edit the registry to remove the trace of SETI in the Services area.

Simply disabling the service works as an uninstall unless you -really- need to uninstall it. If that doesn't suffice, stop the service, remove all the files it installed, fire up regedit (paste standard disclaimer here), go to HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services and delete the key for whatever the service is called.

The FLEXINSTALLER was supposed to be able to have options to select a TeAm Q built in...You dont need to choose a SETIQ and leave it default. As for the XP Service installer, which version do you have? I believe the one I created does not have required Proxy settings.

I have found a way to do all of this remotly except the registry. Does anyone know of a way to edit the registry of a node on a lan? I have a few systems that I used the flex installer on that I may need to take off and can do everything but the registry thing from my desk and without having to log the other person off. Would be nice to be able to dump that registry key, or modify it to point to a new queue if needed.

Yep - I could do all of this but kill the entry in the registry remotely as well but it would be so much easier if it had a simple uninstall in Add/Remove programs or better yet a remote uninstall. ;-)
