Are they worth doing as a job?

Friend has interview this week, and he just has a basic management bachelors. Has no idea what to expect, I was thinking ATOT could help us out :)

Expected salary?
Do you need experience for this type of field

Tell him to focus on his fleet management skills, his attention to detail, and his skills managing people.

I work for a towing company and our fleet manager/driver manager makes 60-70k a year.

Its not a bad job as we replace our trucks often, oldest one in the fleet is 7 years old but 80% are less than 3 years old. We tend to replace them when they get up to about 1 million km's, right before the second engine overhaul is usually needed.

Babysitting the drivers is much harder than managing the trucks, and unfortunatly as a dispatcher working nights and the only person in the office for 12 hours at a time i have to help babysit the drivers as well.

My girlfriend works for a trucking/transport company and her fleet manager is also the operations manager and makes 100k+ a year with bonuses.

Working construction I can relate to this.

The nuts and bolts part of the job is a cake walk, managing the 40 year old children is a whole different beast.

Newer equipment and a dedicated maint. shop make it a much easier job. Drivers will do their own thing, but generally want to drive so they can make money.

It can be very stressful if no one else is there to delegate some of the day to day stuff.

How many trucks are we talking about?

My dispatcher (similar to a fleet manager) makes about $65k per year, works long hours (6:15am -- 4:00pm), and his biggest complaint is that his job is that of a glorified baby sitter. Dealing with breakdowns, repairs, vehicle replacements is nothing. Dealing with 30 employees who constantly bicker is hell.

Is Canada like the US? Are all tow truck drivers felons?

Some companies for sure are that bad, you really need to know who to call in what area to get a good company. Mine is not bad at all, we have the Local Police contract so deal with the police on a daily basis. We do not hire drivers with criminal records because that would put the police contract in jepardy and its 30% of our business.

I have a friend who works logistics for a large company - he seems to really enjoy his work but his hours aren't bad (normal 9-5) and his pay was pretty decent considering that he hasn't had a real job in a few years.
