it's been in the works for quite a while but i thought it had been completed recently. it's only been like 3 yrs since fleet bought out summit. so i doubt it happened before then.

even after the acquisition of FleetBoston?

i have a hard time believing that. citigroup might be bigger, but i'm not sure that pales in comparison will be accurate.

Geez, There goes my account again. I started out with Northeast Savings when I was a kid. They got into financial trouble and some bank with an American Indian like name bought them out. The paint had hardly dried on the signs when Fleet bought them out. Now Fleet is in financial trouble and got bought out.

Rank Bank 2003 Total Assets No. of Employees
1. Citigroup $1.36 trillion 260,000
2. JPMorgan Chase $ $771 billion 94,335
3. Bank of America # $736 billion 133,549

Citigroup pretty much dominates the market in terms of sheer volume

again, is that before or after the fleet acquisition.

i have a hard time believing that BofA and Fleet together end up 3rd.

Those rankings are the same before and post-merger. You neglect to mention the fact that JP Morgan Chase merged with BankOne a while ago. Nonetheless, citigroup is the biggest financial institution in the world no matter how u look at it: revenue, earnings, employees, assets.

BTW, I just confirmed this info with 4 of my friends who are investment bankers

In fact, Citigroup is amongst the largest companies in the world in terms of revenue and earnings

The buyout was orchestrated almost a year ago; it's only now that the accounts and assets of the two banks are being reconciled though.

Edit: Fleet had the largest presence in the New England region though.

citigroup is the biggest in the world. IIRC, it is BofA on the 2nd place in 2002, but still, citigroup was dominant.(I was working in salomon smith barney, which is a part of citigroup).

Anyone else go "huh, Fleet bought out by a jpop group" before realizing what BoA stood for?

What a stupid thing to do.

If this is one of your older cards, it will hurt your average age of accounts, and your FICO score will drop.

Also, closing it will affect your balances to limits ratio negatively, and again your FICO score will drop.
