Sorry, I just got this yesterday and I need to flaunt :)

This is at a Best Buy in the Detroit area.

Me: "You have any of these (pointing@iPAQ3765) in stock?"
BB Guy: "You know, I'm not sure. let me check."
BB Guy: "Nope, none in stock, but we've got a couple of open items here, let me see if I can piece together a complete set."
BB Guy: "I can't get you the rebate, but I can price it low enough that you DON'T need the rebate."
Me looks apprehensively, expressing doubts
BB Guy pilfers for a moment...
BB Guy: "I've got everything but the charger cable. The screen's a little used, but take a look. I can give it to you for $349." handing me an iPAQ
Me: "That's just about what I'd end up spending on a new one after rebates and my 10% off coupon."
Me observes, notices it's a 3635, not a 3765.
Me: "This is the previous generation model, and it only has 32MB of RAM. Plus it's got a nick on the side here."
BB Guy: "Hmm. Let me talk to a manager."
Me runs the iPAQ thru a self-test, everything passes
BB Guy: "Well, I'm told that I can give it to you for $199.99."
Me: "What kind of warranty?"
BB Guy: "2 years extended replacement warranty, $24.99."
Me: "Can I get a charger? and maybe some screen protectors to prevent further scratches?"
BB Guy: "I can give you employee price."

'Nuff said. Works great. Difference compared to newer model? Same processor, same screen, same casing, and, for a $30 upgrade, the same software. And, if it should break... instant $200 discount off of new PDA.

I know that in the past open box was negotiable. I used to always knock 10% off and ask if they would take it.

My friend's father is pretty bold when he goes shopping. He once got a $279 printer for $199, and recently got a $2199 widescreen tv for $1599. The printer was at Circuty City and the tv at Sam's Club. He basically will talk to the sales guy or manager if he can't get anywhere with a sales guy. Asks what it would sale for if it was on sale. Then he just works the angle of I'll give you $#.## right now. And of course says that he will just get it somewhere else if they don't want to deal. He is very polite throughout the deal. He is a salesman by trade and very good one. His opinion is that everything is negotiable.

I've tried it a few times with some success. Lately got a lower price at Tweeter, where I had been previously told they didn't negotiate. Most times I leave feeling embarassed that I even asked.

i wish best buy upper management was nice :( They got into a lawsuit with my dad over payment on my sisters labtop (all blame should be directed at the USPS) and basically ruined his perfect credit. Asked my mom to apply for an American Express Blue and was denied because of what Best Buy did.
