Flat panel scaling "grayed out" in nVidia control panel

This was not the case with my old monitor. All options worked well - I could choose between "do not scale", "use my display's built in scaling", "use nvidia scaling with fixed aspect ratio" or "use nvidia scaling".

Now, all these options are grayed out. I thought my monitor was enabled to handle scaling, so I went into it's menu but here, the option is grayed out also and cant even be selected. When I try to navigate to it in the menu, it just gets skipped.

My old LCD was ViewSonic VP171b(I still use it in a dual mode) and my new monitor is the Asus vh226h.

Is there anything I can do to make the nvidia scaling options work?

it doesnt always work with every monitor. I was LCD shopping for the last couple months and noticed that 2 or 3 monitors out of the several that i tried didnt allow me to change it. btw I noticed you have a 16:9 monitor and it doesnt work on my current 16:9 monitor or any other 16:9 monitor that I tried so maybe that has something to do with it.

I "kind of" solved my problem, but only "kind of". This seems to have something to do with the wide screen resolution. Basically if I set the resolution to say... 1280x1024, and THEN go into my monitors options, the scaling is no longer grayed out and I can choose between "4:3" and "FULL". At this point when I try to play a game at this same resolution, it creates a nice little rectangle in the middle of my screen surrounded by black bars without stretching the image or looking ugly. Just the way I like it. However this is not exactly what I was looking for because the nVidia control panel options are STILL grayed out, and when I scale with the monitor the image is still a "rectangle" not a "square" which means it will not work for games that are not designed for wide screen monitors. :(

I will google for a workaround or a hack that will enable the nvidia scaling options, and hopefully I will find it, but if I don't, please someone link me.

WOOT! found a solution... Apparently my card and several others simply don't support this stuff without a "tweak".

IMO this should be stickied, because countless people on the internet have the same problem and crying about it on forums...

Anyway, here is the link to the perfect solution. Worked like a charm:

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi...d_adp.php?p_faqid=2064

It says that this is for HDTVs, but in truth, it's for wide screen monitors also.

that is one solution .. lost in my bookmarks ..
. . . until now .. thanks

it should not be so hard to find :p

a friend sent me this workaround or a similar one a few months ago in Summer that linked to a thread .. i was/am going to search my gmail for it; however, mine involves Vista and GTX280 - so i do not think it is exactly the same

Well that's the thing.. it was actually quite hard to find.... I spent several hours sorting through Google search results. But then again, I guess if I could find it, any member of AT can, provided they really WANT to find it. ;)

Thanks for the solution, you guys.

I bought a new Sony Vaio Z-540 and it's got a 9300M GS card and when connected to my Westinghouse 47" 1080p screen, it would be full 1080p resolution, just not full screen. It was driving me nuts especially since the "flat screen scaling" option in Nvidia control panel is greyed out.

Anyways, even though it says this fix is for 8 series cards, it worked for me as well.

Thanks again!
