Don't know if my nvidia 6800gt can be up to snuff with the new monitor (samsung 215w) for 3d gaming. It's native resolution is 1680x1050. So I assume it would be murder on the card to have to scale to that resolution if I run a game at a lower one?

Is it preferred to run that games at a lower resolution for performance and let the monitor scale it? I'm sure there is a quality hit.

Never did I imagine buying a new monitor makes want a new computer. :D

To my knowledge, a different element of the card (or different 'section' of the GPU) does the scaling so it wouldn't affect game performance. This ensures that the output is realtime and not laggy. Whatever it is it certainly isn't vector scaling. Sometimes the GPU scaling is better and sometimes the monitor scaling is better. I much prefer the scaling on the NEC 20WMGX2 to my 7800GT's.

Thanks.

So in general it is a "try it both ways and see" kind of thing as far as performance/quality. On a side note the scaling of my 6800gt seemed to be pretty good for general desktop use. I'll just have to play around with it.
