I'm on a study abroad trip to Oxford, and while in one of the shops I noticed a Flat Cap. These caps are not really common in the states, and I was wondering if it's possible to wear one of those hats back home and not look like I'm 80 years old. Personally, I think they look kinda quaint :p Either way, not a bad deal for 8 pounds!

My 84 year old grandpa wears one just like that all the time.

They are stupid looking and are for old people, or lame kids that are so independent and creative oooo but really its more of an emo gayish look.

No gay man I know would be caught dead in that hat.

Whenever I see somebody wearing one I always think it's some trendy/metro/artsy straight kid who's trying too hard.

It's really quite popular in Oxford...

Well it is a foreign country (sort of) so different rules apply.

Don't expect to be able to pull off the look back here.

Your poll is horrible, and will NOT get you an accurate reflection.

Are they for old men only? Are they trendy?
No = Not for old men only, and not trendy either.
Yes = For old men only, and trendy.

You can't have an 'or' and then a Yes/No.

I have 5 that I wear on a regular basis. I prefer them in cooler weather months. In the summer I generally go with a ball cap.

Honestly, what does gay men not wearing it have to do with it?

OP, it's your thing, man. If you like it and it looks good on you, wear it. Some people are old souls and can get away with wearing old school styles.

If you buy one, make sure it's from the UK or Ireland. The Asian cheapos aren't worth the money at any price. I'd expect to pay $20 at the barest minimum, with $35 being closer to reality. Thrift shops are a good place to find them cheap also.

Wear it if you want to differentiate yourself from the crowd. The only people I ever see wearing these (that are in their late teens and twenties) are those that are normally very different and try to stand out. Personally, I think they are hideous and would never be seen with one.

I have a kangol hat similar to that, but it's solid black. I don't know if it's trendy or not, but I like it and my wife likes the way I look in it so I don't.

Ah yea, Kangol. That's what all the DISD school bus drivers wear.

The Kangols are a little too sleek for my taste. I generally prefer wool, but I also have one made from oil cloth that I like for slightly warmer, or wet weather.

I think that Kangol makes wool variants. Most of their hats were wool -- blue, black, brown, or plaid. The extremists wore green.

They're generally wool felt though. I prefer the coarse woven style, that the Irish tend to make. They're kind of reminiscent of a heavy tweed jacket.

I stand corrected.

well, I haven't actually worn it yet ;)

bought it to wear to a family reunion next weekend... I'm anticipating being outside for an extended period and don't want to worry about scalp sun burn.
