I was looking at the updated and optimized Flask mpeg encoding benchmarks at Tomshardware again and I was just thinking.. Couldn't the ppl that are working on the Amd omptimization also optimize it for dual processing?
That would be very neat and I think that mpeg encoding is the kinda work that could be handled very efficiently on a dual cpu rig. Maybe get a nice 60-70% increase in performance.
I also saw that on Amdzone.com that with the latest optimizations an Athlon 1200DDR scores a li'l bit over 16 frames/sec with x87 encoding. Compared to the p4's 19 frames per sec (at 1,5ghz) that is very good!
Let's speculate that with complete optimizations they will be able to squeeze out 17 frames per sec out of an athlon 1200ddr system.
Then imagine what a dual 1200ddr system could do!! We could be looking at framrates of perhaps 27-30 frames per sec!!!.. That would be 45-50% faster than a p4 at 1,5 ghz!! In fact .. the p4 would have to run at about 2,3 Ghz to be able to compete with a dual athlon 1200 ddr.. And the ahtlon system would still be cheaper than the p4 rig!!
Another note.. It would only take a dual Athlon 850 to compete with the p4 in flask encoding.. ofcourse assuming I am right about the performance gains in dual mode encoding.. And again..I am only speculating!
Last but not least.. A single Palomino at 1,4 ghz would perform on par with a 1650mhz P4. And the palomino 1,4ghz is only a month or two away.
And lets speculate some more.. A dual Palomino 1,5ghz will probably be able to encode about 33 frames per sec!.. (about 22,5 frames for a single 1,5ghz times 1,65=33,75).. It would require a p4 running at 2,7ghz (!!) to beat that!!
Now ofcourse this is all pure and utter speculation on my part.
Maybe I am completely wrong about everything I am writing, but I am mainly writing this to see what other think of dual cpu mpeg 4 encoding and what it could do for performance if the encoder was optimized.. So.. comments are very welcome!!!
