Flashing video on HP dv8t with Nvidia GT 230M

I have a new HP dv8t laptop with Win 7 64bit, 6GB RAM and 500GB HD but have had a couple problems with the Nvidia driver that causes the display to flash and Windows to shutdown then restart the driver. I went to the Nvidia website to download the latest driver (195.62) but when I try to install it the installer stops indicating it can't find the right driver. It also seems to think I'm using Vista even though I downloaded the 64bit Win 7 driver.

Any ideas?

I've encountered the same thing with my Compaq notebook where nVidia's site refers you to the brand specific drivers, rather than installing their own generic versions.

You didn't give the complete model number. I found at least two variants of dv8t, -1000 and -1100. Find your model on this page, or search for your exact model number or part number (P/N on the label on the bottom), and check for drivers for Win 7 64.

I suggest downloading all newer drivers to a sub-folder under Downloads and installing any that appear to need updating. HP is usually pretty good about defining the issues each update addresses.

Good luck. :)

I checked the website you linked and it lists the same driver version as I have. So, there doesn't appear to be any fix to a problem that many have had for quite a while. Not good!

I never buy department store branded desktops, but you don't have much choice for lappies. I like HP/Compaq for one very important reason -- I've always gotten great tech support from them for my own lappy and when helping a number of friends with them. Contact Gateway, and the first thing they'll try to do is sell you something. Contact HP, and the first thing they'll do is try to help.

If your machine is still in warranty, you can try their toll free number. If you're beyond that, they should still help you through their online chat. I know they've helped me any number of times with machines that were beyond the limit for phone help. Try here (hope the link works). :)
