flashing motherboard for q9450

i've got a gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard and i need to update the bios in order for it to work with the q9450 and i'm thinking i might buy a celeron d processor to update then switch to the q9450. it's $30 used and it is compatible with the motherboard, but i was just wondering if going through the trouble of messing with a heatsink is necessary if all i'm going to do with it is update the bios. will it burn out if i don't put one on? i don't know i've never put a computer together before. also is there anything else i need to know about doing this? i have 4GB memory. is that going to be too much for the processor or anything like that?

First off to help you out is <<never go without a heatsink. Enough said. As for the memory, 8 gig max in vista and 4 gig max in Xp, that is because xp only reconizes 3.5 of the 4 you put in. As for the processor, All depends what you really want to do? Gamer, encodeing, office work, things like that. If you do these things, then I would just pick up the Q9450. My opinion is to check out the "cpu overclocking forum" to gain more knowledge about processors and how important Heatsinks are. There are many and very smart individuals in here and I owe them a great deal for helping me understand the do's and dont's. Good Luck!
