Actually I can believe it. All motherboard manufactures give you the option to use a floppy (if the board has the port).
You probably could use a USB flash drive, but you need something I can't think of the name at the moment.

Stop triple posting.

DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS UPDATE UTILITY! Many people haven't had good luck by updating their BIOS in Windows. Do it via floppy, a bootable USB drive, or something like the ASUS EZ Flash 2 if MSI has it.

I now use the nvidia BIOS update utility built into Nvidia Control Panel and have no problems running it from Windows. Main thing when doing updates from windows is to make sure no other programs running that could interfere like virus/spyware programs.

I'm pretty sure the K9A2 Platinum mobo still has a floppy controller port.

Anyways, get a hold of the HP USB Format tool, and format a USB stick to be bootable, then flash the BIOS that way, after booting off of the USB stick.

They want you to use a floppy in case someone doesn't know how to any other way as it reduces the number of variables involved. Generally speaking, the safest and most reliable way to go is make a USB drive, hard drive, or CDR bootable to DOS w/o memory managers loading (in the latter case, test that the CDR is readable before proceeding in case you might have a bad burn). Also convenient if a system can't boot to a USB flash drive for whatever reason, is to use an old Compact Flash card and a CF-IDE adapter. Some systems can even boot to a CF, SD, etc, card in a USB card reader though in my experience that's hit or miss, depends on which card reader it is as well as the system bios capabilities.

I have always had success in BIOS flashing on mainboards thru Windows and I have never had any problems. Been doing it this way for years and on countless PC's. Always make a BIOS backup and always download the BIOS from a reliable site.

in the event of using a USB flash drive, make sure it is fat / fat32 formatted, and not ntfs. this is an issue on asus boards, not sure if it matters for others.

It's only mildly amusing. It is possible with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16821103402. Of course, it's much easier to use a usb since most mb manufacturers support it now.

I agree. This is one thing Dell got right (and a long time ago). Of the various mb manufacturers, I've only had problems with asus windows update. Luckily, I haven't bricked anything yet - as some have reported. This is one area where the asus qc people should be fired.

I saw this hp s/w recently on pc-world: http://downloads.pcworld.com/p...eripherals/SP27608.exe. I've always wanted to try it but haven't yet. For people who do a lot of ms-os installs (and maybe slipstreaming), I've always thought a usb would be a much more efficient medium.
