I have read the Shuttle ak31 rev 3.1 topic and found it to be very helpful.

I have the AK31 rev 3.1 mobo and an Athlon XP1600+ due in from Newegg this week.

IF the mobo needed to be flashed to recogonize the new proc, I want to be sure that I am doing it correctly. Please correct me if make a wrong statement.

I made a boot disk using the Dr. DOS program from Bootdisk.com and installed it to a floppy. I then d'loaded the new BIOS files from Shuttle (AK31S2E9) and extracted THAT to the same floppy. The files now contained on the floppy are as follows:

awdflash.exe
ak31s2e9.bin
command.com
ibmbios.com
ibmdos.com
autoexec.com

I will install the new mobo, new cpu with HSF, new memory, video card and connect the 2 HDD's as well as the cdrom and CDRW. Connect power and boot with the floppy. Get to the A:\ prompt and type "awdflash". Enter the name of the new BIOS (ak31s2e9) and then wait for the program to finish and then restart the comp.

At this point, I SHOULD see the proc recognized.

Does this sound totally logical or are steps out of order?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds good to me. There are actually 2 other *.sys hidden files on the disk as well. IO.sys & Msdos.sys Make sure you use a good disk. I am currently waiting on a reflashed bios chip because I used a bad disk and it stopped in the middle of the flash. Just use a clean disk and make sure no memory managers are loaded. A plain system disk, the flash utility, and the *.bin file is all you need.

travisio:

Using the Dr. DOS program and a clean disk, all that should be on the floppy are the files that I listed? Is there a way to check if those other files ARE there?

Your problem ("MAMA ALWAYS SAID "Learn from the mistakes of others" - Forest Gump....sorry) is just the one I had in mind when I asked this question. I don't want to waste time and effort and end up with a dead mobo because I did something that could have been avoided.

I guess what I am looking for is someone to say: "these and only these files should be on your boot disk" when flashing a BIOS.

This is all very new to me. I usually get the "second hand" hardware (i.e a year old) and play around with FSB settings a little and oc'ing the video card slightly. I want to setup the new rig and start USING it right away.

thanks again.
