Flashing Bios... A little guidance

Not a techie and need a little help flashing my bios. I have an Abit BX6 Rev. 2 (I know, a little antiquated).
I'm going to install a new hard drive (40 gig) and will need to update my bios so it will recognize the larger
drive. I'm a little shaky on the exact procedures and wanted to ask for some detailed guidance. From what
I've read, one little mistake and I'm without a computer.

- When making the bootable floppy with new bios and Award flash utility, do you ALSO put the Windows
system files on same disk?
- Will the CMOS have to be cleared before updating bios?
- Do any apps need to be disabled prior to restarting computer?
- Are there any other places to get the latest bios other than Abit? I've had a lot of difficulty accessing their
page.

I'm sure this is easy stuff to most, but don't want to fry my bios. Many thanks for any assistance.

Format a floppy and select the option to make it a bootable/system disk.

windows will put some files on it... you need them for the system to boot.

then extract the files from the BIOS d/l to the floppy. (don't forget the award flash utility)

turn off the computer

insert the floppy and turn it back on.

you don't need to clear your CMOS settings before you flash, but you should do it after a flash

(don't forget to pull the power cord while clearing CMOS)

You don't have to worry about killing applications, because when you boot to the floppy, windows doesn't run (at all)

I put your files here I had to change the suffix to .zip so ComCrap will let you d/l them

just right click and select save to.....

Actually, try putting your flashing and bios files on one floppy, and then download a dr. dos boot disk. That ensures that you will have no system files or apps open, the safest way to flash. AFTER you flash the bios you should manually clear the cmos, there should be a little jumper for this. Thats about all you should need, good luck bud!

well I just download the flash with Asus it is aflash.exe and the bios and put them on a blank floppy, Turn the computer off,Put the Dr Dos Boot disk in and trurn the computer on, It will take you to A: then I just change the floppys type in aflash and when it ask for the new bios I type the full name, Restart the computer hit del, Set bios to defualt, Boot up and then restat and make any changes I want, Fast and easy and never had a problem, When you have as many computers that I have it is just easier and a lot faster

All - Many thanks for your assitance. Sounds easy so I'll give it a try this evening. However, one or two questions... please.

- What exactly is a "Dr. Dos" boot disk???
- Since both the new bios and flash utility are .exe, should they be copied to the floopy that
way or should I run them from the HD and have them execute to the floopy (make sense)?
- Since my bios is from 99, can I skip over all the other updates and go directly to the latest?

Sorry to ask what would appear to be very basic questions, but I just want to get it right.
Many thanks... AGAIN!
