"Flashing" an older DVD drive to a newer model's firmware?

Has anybody tried this? I read about it on i-Hacked.com regarding Lite-On DVD drives, but I want to know if it might work on other models. Getting a dual-layer burner with just a flash upgrade would be cool, but I would hate to kill my drive too.
