Hard OCP, said that there were no performance gains, and that overclocking potential didn't increase either.

Thanx for fixing that link. HMM..when I pasted the link it seemed to work. I feel like an idiot now.

But anyways just wondering if any of you guys tried this? Because I dont have an Nvidia card so I cannot comment on the validity of this information.

Wouldnt try it.... From HardOCP...

GFFX 5900 To 5950 Mod:
We?ve heard about this GFFX 5900 to 5950 mod all weekend. People are flashing their video BIOS to get a 5900 card to think it is a 5950. The mod does almost nothing for performance but it does look like it helps with overclocking. I tried this mod myself and it gave no performance increase at all, and oddly enough it didn?t help my overclocking either, so keep that in mind if you decide to try this on your own.

*UPDATE* I have had a few readers send me e-mail saying the same thing about this ?mod?. Once they flashed the BIOS on their VGA card, no drivers would install. Flashed it back to the original and the drivers still wouldn?t install. I advise you again?.do not attempt these types of mods unless you are willing to risk your card. Even the best of BIOS flashes can go bad and leave you with a dead card.

Just updated my BFG FX5900 to a 5950Ultra.....my default clock speeds show up as 510/950. I installed the latest nvidia drivers, 53.03 before I did this mod. Problems so far: When I bump up the speed to 531/990, CoD gives me errors when I play. Scale back to default (510/950), everything is fine. Going to try something in between, 525/970.....

Well let me simplify it a bit for you. If you have a volkswagon and you take off the vw logos and put on BMW logos what do you end up with humm? Let me guess, you now have leather interior right?

The flash often fails and makes the card permanently a no post wonder.

Flashing nVidia cards is pointless. It's the same as overclocking via Coolbits or Rivatuner, just more risky.
9800np cards flashed to 9800pro gained some extra voltage that made them able to reach higher clocks.
The 5900 family only differs in clock rates.

you guys are idiots. the 5950 bios increases the VMEM and VCORE so that higher overclocks are possible. i maxed out at 449/933 without the bios flash and 499/950 with the bios flash.

and why would it hurt your card? are you saying that 5950's are being hurt just by being used?

Flashing the bios, as in deleting and rewriting the code on the video bios, can fail and destroy the card.

It does NOT increase vmem or vcore.

Help me to understand......the bios is no more than code, then if it fails, why couldn't you just write back the original bios? The utility that I used to flash my bios backed up my 5900 bios....how does it permanently destroy the card (hardware)?

If the card cant post, how do you suggest flashing it back. Unless you have a PCI card on hand

Yes, that's what I heard is the way to do it.....flash back with another PCI card. So how exactly does it destroy the card then? When you say destroy, are you talking about hardware level destruction?
