let's see adobe acrobat/reader has a vulnerability right now and for what the last 6 months? endless suffering.

flash? i log 80% crashes from flash - dep errors - etc. there is no need for flash to watch video. maybe to play games - definitely not to do what many html5 enhancements can do.

if we killed flash video that would probably nail the coffin. kind of like java - you see much java websites lately? probably not so much anymore.

i'm just saying this is seriously getting old adobe --

That's my thought. like WTF is there even to update? There should be no channels for any exploits in an app that is suppose to read a static "image". There's no reason why anything should even be executing.

Same with flash, there is no reason why anything in flash should have channels that enable access to the PC it is running on. The scripting should be self contained in the single flash file, having no access to outside that context. I don't get how they manage to screw these things up so badly.

I would not want a MS technology to replace it though... it would be just as bad or worse. Do you think they will bother to make a firefox, opera, or chrome version? No, it will be IE only, and it will be like activeX. It will be that much harder to push alternate browsers.

The only good replacement would be something open, that's not owned by a certain company.

We do need something better than Flash. But all existing Flash videos would need conversion to whatever new standard comes along. As to .pdf it is a very necessary function, but perhaps, best not handled by Adobe Reader. Reader was decent up to about V6 then it started getting very bloated for doing a very simple task.
