doh!!
It is supposed to update automatically if you turn that setting on, but I've found that it doesn't always do that for some reason.

Not if the users are not an admin, it just prompts and then asks for the password so usually turn it off the auto update

Here it seems to work. Our users don't run as admin, and the updates work in the background.
I've been checking our machines and they are at the latest version without manual updates.

However, for some reason, in between major versions, this doesn't always happen or takes much longer, which is irritating. It would also be really convenient if they had 1 installer for both IE and Firefox.

I've found it almost never does that no matter how many times you tell it to update automatically.

Still no download at Adobe for 17.0.0.134 ... guess maybe they found a bug and rather than release it, they went to 17.0.0.135 (which is also still not there)

I am wondering if the difficult in the find is related to this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3044132

Which would suggest that, while it is a security update, it is being distributed by Microsoft since it only applies to IE running on Windows 8 and Server 2012.

Win8 always has IE browser flash upgraded via WU,third party browsers like FF,Chrome etc you just get it direct from the adobe website.

Now that YouTube doesn't need flash I won't ever install it again.

Yes since Youtube player is HTML5 by default (and you don't play games online) you don't need flash since it's only used for ads today. Chrome users also don't need to install flash since it's already bundled with Chrome browser...
