Flash Memory for Xbox 2?

There is a rumor that the Xbox 2 - will no longer have a hard drive - but will be equipped with a large amount of flash memory - to replace the hard drive. Microsoft has switched to making the Xbox a loss leader - in other words - lose money on the Xbox - to make it up in royalties in game (which is up to $10 per title!). So - the rumor is that MS will put in expensive flash memory.

What are your thoughts on flash memory replacing the hard drive of a game console? Basically - the Xbox's hard drive is used for game saves, and music copying presently.

the xbox comes with a 8GB HD

8 gigs of Flash memory woudl cost over 10K

thats 1 hell of a loss leader

EW XBOX!

^^lol not an xbox fan^^

My moral: If you wanna play Halo play it on the PC, otherwise get it for PS2.

I've heard the same rumor as well, and I'm sure if it's true, that MS has enough pull to make it cost-effective enough for them.

Also, if it's true, I think it's a very good thing. Much faster load and save times and if they use part of that for game "buffering" that would increase game load times even more.

halo is not on ps2, nor could ps2 handle it if sony's life depended on it

It may cost that now - but the next Xbox won't be coming out for at least another year - MS has moved up their release date to next year to compete with Sony. So - there is a year for the price to come down, and the technology to go up - that was the strategy is the flash was to be used - but the time they were put int he Xbox's - it would be affordable. Then - MS has three years of sales to pay for the memory - as MS is gettign a fixed cost for the Xbox - the flash price for the makers goes down (much more so than xbox price reductions over time)

To another poster - it is simply impossible to buy any Halo game for the PS2.......

I am never playing online games on a PC. I have grown tired of driver updates, system obsolesence, and wondering if my rig will work for a game. The Xbox is easy, its cheap - and not everyone plays for grpahics - I play for fun - and the Xbox Live component where user names and accounts span all games is just great. If you buy an Xbox game - it works, unless you have hardware problems (but that is separate from just plain bad games). If I want to system link with friends - peice of cake - I just grab the Box. Well - I might do one or two games - but the Xbox is just more fun - right now - I just got a message on my PC, that a friend of mine logged in on a game - I don't have - I can start up a game I do have - and invite him.

Unless it's slow. 1GB thumb drives are $70-80.
If you could figure out the actual cost of the memory minus the packaging and markup of a thumb drive, your probably looking at $20GB. Still- that's $160.
