Flash firmware through firewire/usb2?

The internal DVD burner that came with my laptop is a POS and I want to get something of better quality. I am thinking about getting a Nec 3520A and putting it in an external Firewire or USB2.0 enclosure.

Question, would I be able to flash the firmware while it's connected to firewire/usb2, or does it need to be on an IDE chain?

It all depends on your laptop, your best bet is to use fire wire if the bios will support an external device.

Don't flash the firmware over USB2.0! Atleast I'll never try to again, it totally wrecked my Pioneer DVR-108 to the point where Windows could only see it but I wasn't able to do shit. Just buy the NEC 3520A and be happy, its fast enough for now.

Hrm, maybe I will look into a slim drive. I believe I have a liteon 431s in the laptop now which is causing me nothing but headache's.. I used to have a Pioneer AO6 in my old desktop before getting the laptop and never had a problem with it.
