Flash adverts - How can I disable them?

Edit: Wanting solution for IE, aparting from moving to Firefox 😉

Hi, I've just started a fresh installation of XP SP1, I've realised that Flash 5 is preinstalled (some flash adverts appear), but in addition whenever I visit anandtech I am pestered by the "Do you want to install Flash 7, yes/no".

I'm getting sick of intrusive flash adverts so what I want is to get rid of Flash 5 which is already on my system and somehow block the persistant "Do you want to install Flash 7" box that appears.

Ideally, I was wondering if there could be an "on/off" switch for the plug-in. For example, as some sites rely on flash for basic navigation, I could switch it "on", and switch it "off" for other sites that bombard you with flash adverts (e.g. IGN)

Anybody got any suggestions? DIY or otherwise?

Thanks for any help.

I use adshield. Just have to see it once, click to never see that ad (or its provider) again. After a day or so, you'll never see an ad of any kind except when you go to sites you've never been (and often those will be clean as well depending on your block list). Its a pretty manual, but highly effective solution, and will stack well with any other solutions you may come up with. Older versions, if you can fine them, are free.
