Flaming Asus

It could be a bunch of things. The fire happpened originated in the area, maybe closer to the pci slot. Hard to say.

Yes, I found it very odd myself, I'm sending it back regardless, just figured you guys would like to see the toasted machine

Thats the thing, this was overnight and there was nothing usb connected

Then what was on the other end of those usb cables?

Lucky you still have a place to work, that was a pretty bad fire..:Q

I remember there was a thread about blown caps on an Asus prescott mobo a while back. Perhaps the quality of Asus boards had gone downhill recently?

Front usb ports, but no device connected. As for the fire, I'm sure our sprinkler system would have kicked in, however then we would have had lots more dead machines.

Yes, the cpu is in tact, but I really doubt that it is working. The heat sink was pretty melted as well and the cpu has some black marks on it, which is probably from smoke, but I wouldnt try to use it

I do recall a lot of motherboard manufacturers getting a bad batch of capacitors. I believe Asus was among them but they don't have those problems anymore. It could have been from that batch and I would not blame it on Asus if it was.

Meh, I bet the CPU is OK. If you don't want to try it, feel free to send it to me. 🙂

I'm sending the whole shebang back to the place where we bought it for RMA, from speaking to them on the phone they said it sounds like physical damage and they likely wont cover it. Well, if thats the case then I dont think my company has need of their services any more. This was 100% faulty board, it has been running like a champ since day 1 when I put it in and hasnt been opened since.....

Hah, SiS chipset.

Huh? Do SiS chipsets have a bad reputation or something? I've got a couple machines with their chipsets (including two trusty K7S5As) and they run like champs even after several years.

Or is there just a "anything besides nVidia sucks" thing going on.

BTW - Love the pics. Too bad you can't keep it, that's downright impressive! That board says PWNED all over it.
