I don't know what is up with this, but I just got a new Motorola Surboard 5120. When I plug the ethernet connection into my computer it seems to be working ok (though I've been dropped a few times, comcast says it is due to an outage in my area.) But when I plug the ethernet into the wan port on my router, all of the activity lights on both my router and switch start flashing constantly. All the connections break down until I pull the modem out. Then everything returns to normal. What could possibly caust this?

Make your connections with the power off to the modem and router. Put power to the modem and wait until the lights stabilize. Then, power to the router and wait again.

If everything is still going spastic, reset the router. There is usually a recessed button on the back that will do this. I would read the documentation that came with it and follow the directions.

If it's still going crazy, get into the configuration and make sure the firmware is at the latest revision. Flash if necessary, again following the directions. I flash all routers to the latest firmware as standard procedure.

If this doesn't take care of it, call Linksys.

Comcast sucks lately in my area, I have a few friends that are having the same problem in the same general area in Southern NJ. I don't know what their issue is, but I wouldn't doubt if it's related to the problem you are having.

I heard a rumor that Comcast is "having so much trouble with people steeling our internet" that they are putting some type of hardware in place in order to put a stop to this.

The few people that are able to steal internet from them I would doubt they are breaking the bank of Comcast. Hey Comcast go rape your customers for some more money.....lol

I did a hard reset on my router and now when I plug the modem in, the switch and router stay connected, but the internet activity light still flashes like crazy and the router is never assigned an ip address. I could understand if it didn't work on my pc either, but it seems like it may be an incompatibility with the modem/router. My connection dropped this morning though, so maybe it is a problem with comcast.
