Flakey partitioning from Partition Magic

I've used PM 8.0 and Win2K dozens of times with no problems and on drives more complicated than this one. This week I was setting up a new system and couldn't get PM to create and/or recognize the second data partition. It would supposedly create it, but deny it a drive letter. Then I kept getting Error 986 saying it couldn't find information for that partition when I tried to go back and fix it.

I finally gave up when I remembered you could do it through Disk Management. That worked no problem, but I'm still confused as to why PM 8 all of the sudden kept screwing up.

Does anyone have any ideas?
