Flags at half staff?

So I was just away for two weeks in New Mexico visiting my sister/bro-in-law and doing some traveling around with them. Well, we went to two National Parks (White Sands and Carlsbad) and the flags were at half staff and the rangers were wearing a big black stripe on their badges. Then today while driving I saw a rest stop (in NYS) on the side of the thruway with a US flag and NYS flag both at half staff.

Did I miss something while I was away or have I been oblivious to something for awhile?

Thanks. :)

Linflas, any links? I didn't hear about that. Not to mention, why would a NYS Rest stop have their flags at half staff if that was the case? I saw a fire dept today with their flag all the way up.

I think you're right... I thought the White House flag set precedent for that. Would love to be enlightened on the matter.

You are probably correct, but I have seen towns and villages fly US flags at half mast when a mayor or someone like that dies.
