Flag etiquette?

I would like to hear your opinions on something I am *thinking* of doing. At present I have to use a ladder to put up, and take down the flag, and sometimes I forget to take it down at dusk 😱 . So I figured I could add a spot lamp, (which I already have), to the existing
Low voltage system, that comes on at dusk, and off at around 1am.
Am I a bad man for even thinking of doing this? Bare in mind, I?m the last house on a cul-de-sac in a gated, retirement community.

Spot lamp would be a cool idea. Is it a flag pole with no running halyards or is just a pole with stationary halyards... or is just a pole off the face of the house?

Yeah, technically it's supposed to be lit at night, and if you leave it up all the time, you're also supposed to make sure it's an all season one too or something like that (didn't read the link). My parents don't do that for the flagpole they have outside, though.

I leave my flag outside all the time. It is close enough to a street light that I consider it lit. No one has ever said anything to me about it, so I guess it's seems OK to them, too.

The latter, mounted high up, hence the need for a ladder. Also, the low volt system is rather extensive, and 600
watts, otherwise I would let it run all night.

What if you ran some rope THROUGH The halyards to make a line for it? Just attach a place to tie the rope down at the bottom and you're good to go.

You don't need pulleys or anything. Just measure some suitable rope or line twice the distance of the pole, attach a clip like you'd find at the end of a dog leash on one end, put the loose end through the halyards and drop it down, attach another clip to the other end.

Attach the flag's grommets with these clips and raise it up. The clips should stop the flag from going all the way around because they shouldn't fit through the halyards.

Or you could just replace the whole system with a pulley system and it would be cheaper than putting in lights.
