Fixing stuck pixels with software?

I have a stuck green pixel on my screen - so was looking at any way to fix it, and stumbled across software that flashes colors across the screen to fix stuck pixels. Wtf? How can software fix a hardware problem? There seems to be enough people across the internet that have had success with such software so it must work occasionally...but what's the science behind it?

Btw, didn't work on my stuck pixel dammit.

It's physically stuck, but asking it to switch around rapidly can manage to unstick it, if it's not stuck too badly.
