fixing striped raid format???

Hi
i striped 2 40gb hd's togeahter a month ago about . . .and a few days ago one of them failed on me

so i bought a new harddrive, still hoping that the failed harddrive would come back to life...and to my surprise, it did
the only problem is, that while it was acting up (i was a bit frustrated with it) i entered the raid bios and hit destroy raid stripe (knowing that was a pointless thing to do....), so now i dont know what to do
is there any way i can just fix that destroyed stripe? both harddrives have all the info on them and all, it just needs to make the connection
any way to repair a broken striped raid?

i have tons of saved stuff on it, really dont want to lose all of it!!!! please help !! is there a program or anything out there i could get? hmm...

David

that's the risk of raid 0, if anything goes wrong all the data is near inevitably lost, if u cannot fix the broken harddisk (scandisk or whatever) all your data is gone unless u let it recover by specialised companies (dunno anyone by heart but there R in existence) this will probably cost u over $10.000 because the recovery has to be done with electrone funneling microscopes ... not something for everyday use.

live fast, live dangerous .... I wouldnt touch raid 0 with a ten foot pole, and there u have why 🙁

What you are asking is very difficult. You don't specify the OS and version of RAID controller you are using, but check from the manufacturer and see if they have any recommendations.

Each RAID controller (model and manufacturer) is different in the way it formats and creates arrays. If a drive is replaced the new drive must be created exactly as the the previous (like with expensive imaging software which is able to do so)

From what I understand, it may be possible to recover data, but it is not always possible. If you can recreate the array as it was originally with the same drive geometry and the same partitions size with same origianal partitions and do not format it, there may be a way to recover the data on these drives to another drive large enough for the data to be recovered. Then once you recover your data, remake the array (RAID 0) and reformat.

Once again, I believe most manufacturers like Promise dont' provide support for this, but they may have info on their site of others who have successfully recovered data.

Last, never store any important data on a RAID 0 stripe, either software or hardware. RAID 0 should only be used for unimportant data, installed software, temporary cache or other speedy storage. Important documents and e-mail should never be stored on a RAID 0 array.

Best wishes on your recovery effort.

k, yeah its a highpoint controller . . HPT372 chipset

i found a program or 2 that have some weird options like virtual striped drive and "assign raid signature" ?

im also trying to find htat RAIDrb program from highpoint ...see if that can fix it . .
thx for the replies

I've seen several threads on RAID crashes in the last few days. One thread mentioned some software that is supposed to be able to recover data from a RAID crash. Here it is:

RAIDSW

You can DL a demo which will tell you what the full pkg will be able to recover--so you can see what you would get before you plunk down your $$$s (I just DLd the demo myself for insurance <g> ). Can't beat that!

Good luck.
