For the current newer models cars, is it becoming harder to regular maintance/repairs in your own driveway?

No, b/c regular maint. is becoming less these days. Now at 100k when the plugs are to be replaced, it will be harder than your 78 ford.

why is that? Don't you just need the ECU reader to diagnose such things. I mean oil changes, spark plugs, brakes and stuff is all the same isn't it.

on some of these cars, you cant even find the spark plugs, even on some cars to change the sepretine belt, you have to pull the engine out almost.

According to the GM shop manual, the engine on my Olds Aurora is supposed to be dropped from the front to change the drive belt. I've done it without unbolting the motor mounts, however, but it took over an hour to do.
