Well my XP Pro boot was running just fine when I went to work yesterday.
I came home from work and at some time during the day my computer had re-booted, and was now sitting at the windows 98SE start screen.
I re-booted into XP again and got all kinds of errors and a BSOD. So I tryed again, same thing. Eventually I booted into "Last known good config." same problem. My start menue is now GONE. I can't enter ADMIN. tools and I can't use system restore (From the GUI) When I do I get REG. error message.
Short of doing a repair install on XP, does anyone know how I can repair my REG., or do a system restore from with-in the GUI????

EDIT: BTW I'm tri-booting with 98SE/Windows 2000 Pro/XP Pro and both the other OS's are working just fine. So it's not a BIO's or hardware issue.

you could try booting into safe mode, from there you should be able to run a system restore (in theory) but that is something I havent ever tried/done.

Good Luck!

Yes - a SafeMode boot does give you the System Restore option - use it and go back to when it was good. It works for me!

Nope, that doesn't work.
I tried that.
My start menu is gone, as well as a LOT of other things.
I can't even FIND system restore.....
None of my Admin tools work either.
I can get into control panel, but can't even add new programs...

ARGHHHH

Geuss I may have to bite the bullet as reinstall (repair)

you could try finding the restore program on your HD, here is it's location:
"%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe"

good luck

Good call spyordie007
I was able to atleast RUN system restore that way, but alas it says my system can not be restored to (apperantly) ANY restore point!

ARGHHHHH

So far I am NOT impressed with XP.

This has happend to me several times now in XP, but 2000 seems to run flawlessly.....

(STUPID XP...)

I guess it's time to re-install............AGAIN.............

I wonder WHY this keeps happening???????????

BTW: I tried doing a repair install too, and THAT didn't work either.....

Anyway to fix the REG.??
Regedit will not run......
There should be a back copy of it someplace, anyway to restore the backup?

yes, if you have a backup copy of the registry you can restore to it in XP.

I've never done it before but XP has a new command line program simply called "reg"
one of the switches for it is /restore
I would do a "reg /?" and try and figure out how to restore from one of your backups (good for you for keeping them, I never do...)

or were you talking about a backup of regedit?
that is available on your win xp cd in the "i386" dir. they didnt even change it's name to confuse us, should still be regedit.exe
if you would rather use regedit32 than just grab the "regedt32.ex_" and rename it to "regedt32.exe"

cheers

No I was talking about restoring the back-up Reg.
The problem is I have no start menue, so I have no RUN command.
Is there anywhere else I can access the run command in XP?

Well I tried every suggestion and could not repair the REG.
I tried restore (No joy)
Repair console (NO joy)
A repair reinstal ("")
SO I finally just reinstalled.
The wierd thing is though, I started the "new install" option and after the first reboot, decided to try thr repair option again. After all was said and done. Windows was reinstalled and EVERYTHING was as it was before the meltdown.. :)

WIERD

Anyway, thanks for everyones advice and support!!!
