Fixing Mistake on Credit Report

I got my own personal Credit report and I noticed that I had an account on my report that did not belong to me at all. Not only that, but it was over it's credit limit, so I think it is having some adverse affect on my credit (the account is only for $300, but it is reading $308). All of the credit agency's show the pay status of current and none of them show delinquent payments. It says that it is a joint account (I have no recolection of ever opening up a joint account with anyone).

At the end of the credit report, there is contact information for each of creditors. The one for the account mentioned earlier does not have a phone number included, but only an address. I am going to send a letter to them. My questions are:

1) Who do I address it to?
2) Can they tell me who is on the account beside me?
3) Other than mentioning to them that it is a mistake...what else should I do/say to expedite getting this cleaned up?

If anyone with experience in this area can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

contact the credit reporting agency (whoever u got the report from i.e experian, transuion, or the other guy)

Good luck. Even with a lawyer it was difficult to get them to fix their mistakes.

You know, people can complain all they want to about how the gov't is "big brother" but I think the credit reporting agencies are the ones we really need to worry about. The bastards. :|

ps - my credit is VERY good, I hope they can't trace my username to my SSN. 😛

What he said. Also, if you order a credit report from x credit company, you can submit your dispute online.
