Fixing dialog going from 5.1 movies to 2.0 stereo?

I have a 2.0 stereo hooked to the blu-ray player via RCA jacks. Most modern movies are in 5.1 format and the dialog gets horribly muddied when merged to 2.0. Any fixes for this? Playing on the TV set instead of stereo has the same result, muddy dialog. Some movies are so bad, we show the subtitles to follow the dialog. I don't have any interest in a 5.1 system just for movies.

is there a receiver in the mix? If not, can you attach the speakers directly to the tv?

There is a receiver.
The speakers aren't self powered. The blu-ray player is responsible for down mixing.

Ok, I get it now. You need a newer receiver that can do 5.1, because most blu-ray disc don't do 2.0 sound.

There should be a setting in the player for 2.0 sound output. I've never seen one without.

There is, but the output sounds muddied.
Could it be the speakers or amp? The dialog on my 2.1 system sounds fine downmixed. Just as clear as on my 5.1 main system in the main system.

My 2.1 system is actually my computer, so I set to "Stereo" "Full Range" in the realtek app. No reciever, the speakers are powered by a two channel Rotel power amp. Powered sub.

None of mine have it. I'll double check my Oppo 203, because it's been ages since I was in the setup menu.
