Fixing an HP computer running WinXP home with WinXP Pro CD?

I have a friend that has and an old hp computer that's running Windows XP home edition. It came factory installed, and they can't seem to find restore cd that came with the computer. Well the other day I was over their looking at it and if froze so I pulled the plug and when it booted back up it goes to a blue screen every time saying that theres something wrong with the boot device. So I know that I need to repair the install, but will I be able to do that with a WinXP pro CD without completly reinstalling everything?
